Mike,

I have done a couple of Keys trips before ... and I just book a 4-day weekend trip in October with the wife ... I have to give her free riegn on a shopping run to Key West, but it gives me a full day on the flats ... Ft. Lauderdale is about 30 mile north of Miami, so it would add a half hour to the drive South ... but Miami and Ft. Lauderdale are both a heck of a lot cheaper and easier to fly into ... There are a few nice beaches that will offer a chance at bonefish along the drive .... There is a good book out there ... Flyfisher's Guide to the Florida Keys published by Wilderness Adventures Press ... The folks at The Saltwater Angler in Key West have been very helpful to me in the past - line choices, fly patterns, wading locations, etc. ... worth giving them a call as well ... February and March can be a little dicey depending upon the weather ... April is a decent month, fishing improves and the angling crowds have not yet decended upon the area ... Early May can be great ...

Funny you should mention that book cause its at Sierra trading post on sale right now.

I’m looking hard at May and I'm pretty sure that's when we'll head down. I’d love to pull my skiff down but the gas and time lost hardly seem worth it. What do you think?
Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

That's an awful long way to trailer a skiff ... if you're planning on spending a couple/few weeks in the area, then I'd say it's worth it ... otherwise, I agree with your earlier assessment ... why waste valuable fishing time ... There are actually a decent amount of beaches you can hit up and down the keys, without a boat ... and in May, they'll give you access to bonefish a plenty ... and you can alway rent a skiff down there for a few days to chase after the Tarpon ... which you'll want to do ... May is when the big ones do start to show up in numbers ... I would suggest grabbing a guide for a day at least ... to gather a little info on techique, flys and locations ...
