Who uses a Gallows Tool?
« on: November 20, 2007, 08:10:01 AM »
Mikes post about his new vise got me to thinking, who uses a gallow to tie Parachutes?
I used to use mine regularly til i started tying the post with Turkey flats, i'll still use it on the smaller post or flies.

I've considered one but never bought it. I don't tie Para's that much, in fact I don't tie alot of dries cause I pretty much suck at dries. ECH, Compara/sparkle Dun, Adams, and a few Para's and that about it. I'd love to get in a class for tying dries. I bet Hugh Hartsell would be a good teacher. hint hint.

Hugh would be a great teacher. His dries for the park and East TN are incredible.

No gallows tools here, I need to work REALLY hard on my dries.

Count me in on a "How to Tie Dries" class ... I fondly refer to my dries as "fast water flies" ... where a quick current might be enough to hide my imperfections enough to fool half-blind trout ...

I never use a gallows tool for tying dries. I learned to tie them before I had purchased the gallows tool, so the tool seemed too much of a hassle after learning to tie them without it.

However, there is one particular style of fly that I do use the tool for. It's the dandelion style emerger dry/nymph. I'll use the tool for making the dry/parachute body, then tie the dry part of the fly onto the nymph part.

They are probably good tools for people who have never tied dries.....but if your already tying, and set in your ways (like myself), the tool may be more of a hassle than a help.

I have a Gallows tool and one that holds the rear of an extended body fly, and like most people never use them.

the tool may be more of a hassle than a help.

That's kinda how I saw it Rocky. Something that helped me with Para's was using foam instead of the calf body hair.

Yea, calf hair can be a pain too. For the most part I tend to just use polypro for my wings. It's easy to work with, trims up nice to any shape you like, floats well, and comes in a lot of colors.
