The poor fish seemed to be really confused on Sunday. The classic "off white" soft hackle didn't get a glance for the most part. Nailed a few large bows in the riffle with a "Partridge and Purple" size 18 soft hackle, and the rest of the day they hit the no. 20 bead head dropper.
As reddog mentioned, the midges were just not coming off, and what few did come off that I saw were #30s or smaller. He and I chatted for a few minutes while he changed rods and scratched his head over the way the fish were behaving, and then he went of to his pool and I concentrated on the riffles.
Ran into a young couple that had just moved to Athens, AL from PA. This was their first time on the Elk. They had stayed overnight at the park and fished both Sat and Sun. They were appaled by the inappropriate behaviour of some folks, but were happy to have a sympathetic ear on Sunday. To give you an idea of just how confused the fish were... they had caught several fish on a Royal Coachman!!
I've just got to get better about switching flies, and fly types when they aren't hitting well. I've got a idea that it might be time to try some smaller streamers... anyone ever tried that route?
