Sage Rods
« on: December 12, 2007, 08:25:59 PM »
Anybody like them? use them? why or why not? My main concern is with the company and it's reputation, warranty service, and customer service.

Ah heck, just let me know if they cast smooooth? Interested in 3,4, or 5 WTS.
There are so many different models to choose from, even the discontinued rods. Which ones are the keepers?

Sure do, they are great rods and have great warranty. But as with anything, I am sure there has been good and bad experiences.

I love my XP 5 and 8 wt. Nice and fast and the 5 wt has a nice soft tip.

I cast Mike's custom Xi2 in a 7 wt and it is the cats meow!

Go for it!!  ;D

I fish SP's , #5 is my go to rod, only rod I ever got rid of that I still miss was a SP #4, was looking for a XP #7 but gave up, found a SP #8.

I try not to be brand loyal, but all in all I am, for sure when it comes to rods.

Hey I love them fish em and sell em they have a rod that normal fits everyone with a warrenty that can t be beat .  I don t really have any problems with mine at all I love the way they cast and for finding the rod you want the best thing you can do is find a shop with demos that they will let you cast for me I have rods in 3 diff series they have and soon to be 4 .   The Z axis fast action streamer rod in a 5 wt the vt2 in a 3 wieght and a fli in the 5 wt and 6 wt which is a hell of a dry dropper rod which has  a nice med action to it . I have cast most of the models they have in production and some that have been discontinued if you tell me what you are looking for and what action of rod you are looking for I will point you in the right direction
The more I fish the more I realize it isn t about the fishing.  The older I get the more I realize it is about the moments God has hand crafted just for me.

Let us know what it is you're looking for. I've got a few and you'd be welcome to cast any of mine. Sage makes some sweet blanks no doubt about that.

Best Rod Company on the market in my mind, I have a Sage 9ft 3wt XP - the best trout sick on the water again that is in my mind.  I also have an XP 5 wt and a FLi 6 wt I wouldnt sell or trade any of my sage rods for anything - I have had to deal with sage twice on their warranty policy for the XP 5 wt ( first time I broke the tip and the second was a problem in the handle ) both times I sent the rod to sage with my 30 dollars and each time the rod was back in my hands within 12 days good as new - Once you buy a sage rod you are never going to buy another - My next rod will be a Sage XI2 9ft 9wt - even there bargain rods the launch and the FLi are fantastic rods my brother and my uncle both cast Launch 9ft 3wts and Love them dearly - I love my 6wt FLi it is great rod and for the money it was that much better an any thing on the market

I do own 2 of them Curtis...a RPL+ and a GFL..which I built a few years ago and I do like both of those.  I did own a Z-Axis but found something more suited to my casting style and liking.  While I do think that the Z Axis is a pretty good choice for some folks, I also think that the XP was a little better rod.

I have read several independant evaluations on fly rods and which is the "best" and in my opinion, the "best" is in the eyes and minds of the person making the statement.  I also know a lot of folks that own a "Sage" or a "Winston" or a "Thomas&Thomas" because of the name on the rod and not in it's ability to meet their needs, and thank God, not everyone is like that.  Heck, I even know one person that told me one day that he loves a particular rod for the way it casts, but he couldn't afford to be seen on the river with anything but a Sage...go figure.

Thanks guys, the only Sage I have ever fished with was a 4WT RPL and that was just briefly while my friend Scott was kind enough to let me fish with it while he was cussing, uh I mean, cutting my leader knots out!

A fiend of mine in E TN is practically giving me a 490 SLT. Just wondered if Sage was worth owning or if I should just get rid of it :-\

Curtis, I have a couple Sage rods which were gifts from family and friends.  You're welcome to stop by here and try em.  Just give me a call.  As a matter of fact it was our mutual friend Scott who got me to lusting after another Sage when I cast his rpl four years ago.   They don't make the rpl now, and I didn't trust  buying a used rod from any sources on line, like e-bay,  so I settled for an SLT after casting one a few times.  Even though I couldn't cast worth a darn when I bought it, and still can't cast really well, ... the Sage is a pleasure to fish.  Sweet rod which my son uses when he gets to fish.  And the life-time warranty is tough to beat.   Grumpy and Leo or Mike, as well as others will be able to talk specifics with you.  They will also let you trial cast any rod they have.  Often the lower priced rods will cast as well if not better than the higher priced.

Regardless of the price:  If it makes you a happier fisherman then it's worth it.  Notice I didn't mention it making anyone a better fisherman.  But heck, maybe it does make us better just cause we feel so darn happy when we are out there playing with the trout.

As far as any fly rod or anything else.... anytime you have in your possession something of high quality it will be a source of joy, and eventually its quality will soak into us. (I hope)  That's how I feel about the high quality boo sticks passed my way by Leo.  I just love the smell of those rods, especially the one from Christmas last year when Leo and my wife teamed up to give me the best danged Christmas gift I've ever recieved.   It's a Heddon, 8x5, a rod built originally in the 40's before the bamboo embargo.  Leo re-stored it to perfection and it is a pure pleasure to have in my hands even if I am only practice casting in my side yard.   I can't say much more about how much I love the way that rod dances without risking banishment from the board.   Can't help myself,  that rod is like dancing with a sweet willing girl.  I swear I can almost hear its laughter when we hook a trout.

By the way, have you heard from Scott recently?  He stays high on our list of folks to mention when we pray.

sierratradindpost.com has 9' 6wt SLT's on sale for $392. You can use a code at checkout for another 20% off LSHOPBARG7 or 60038. They have free shipping too so this is a good deal for those who are in the market.

That is a pretty good deal. That is where I picked up my two XP's last year.

I love STP, i buy all my base layer stuff there and got tons of stuff for my first winter out here in colorado there. They always have a coupon code for 20% off $75 if you google for it. If you combine the codes with a good sale you canget things ridiculously cheap. I got an orvis streamline rod for $17 last year. Its not a great rod but is a good cheap backup.

Adam that's some good info right there! Does that 20% off code change?

it chages every couple of months but you can almost always find  a current code. I usually search the forums at:
slickdeals.net or fatwallet.com for codes. Occaisonally you can find a 25-30% code in there.
