TFO Axiom
« on: December 16, 2007, 10:30:09 PM »
Well, it's a done deal.  I'm set on getting this rod.  Went to a buddy's shop the other day and cast the 6 wt Axiom and the 7 wt TiCr both with the same reel and 7wt GPX line, and the Axiom outperformed the TiCr HANDS DOWN in both smoothness of cast and distance.  I just can't comprehend why they call it a 6 wt---it's more like a 7.5.

Ben Walters from the store came out and gave me a little insight on my casting....I asked him about distance and what it takes to land a 100ft cast.

He peeled  all the line off the reel, plus 10 feet of backing......in about 4 false casts, he launched the line forward, and all of it shot straight out like a rocket with enough momentum for another 10 feet.  This was his first time to cast the Axiom, and he too was quite impressed.  I can't wait for the Spring smallmouth, stipers and shad-chasing trout.  I'll have that rod in January.

hmmm, the TiCRx would have been a closer race, the Axiom is a nice rod, i overshot a cast into the street & got a fly line flattened :-\ It was Leo's thought though, he's all the time cleaning the blame things, whoever heard of doing such a thing ;)

Travis,

You made a good choice there. I spent time casting that rod at the recent FFF conclave here in Mt Home, October.

Ticrx are also great rods, l have the 5/6/7wt of those and they are all well able to throw a line over 110ft, not that l would fish that way out.

You are also correct that the given line size for many rods is a nonsense, as they way underrated.
The Ticrx 5wt is something like 6.8 if l recall and the Sage TCR 5wt almost a 7.

Which is why we chose to use such rods for the so called 5wt distance casting events !!, all be it there is some jurisdiction for the line used.

Bottom line for being able to cast 100ft plus is casting practice.

Davy.

What is the difference between the TiCR and TiCRx?

Can't tell from the TFO site or the descriptions on Cabelas or other sites.

The X is a lot faster/stiffer than the r, the r has a little more feeling.

It is truly amazing how well the Axiom performs for sure...I do think the TicrX is a bit more powerful, but I think the Axiom has a lot more feel to it.  I like the way it casts with some of Grumpys flat line on it too..

I guess the most intriguing thing about the ratings and performance of some of the new rods is that the new 5's perform like 6's or better and yet they still tend to call them a 5.  Kinda curios what they are basing that on, and also I wonder how they would stand up against each other in the common cents system

Leo... you're staying up too late..  like me... :D  I have some kind of TFO rod, a couple of them, ... every time I use one of them  on the river I wonder why I  ever feel the "need" for any rod that costs more.  One life time warranty isn't much better than the next.  Right? Well, no, that isn't just right.  A TFO repair can be accomplished for $25 bucks plus shipping ..others, tho supposedly free, end up with pretty large shipping and insurance fees.  $40 plus ... in the case of a Winston or Sage.  (A "free" replacement tip for my Sage was 90 bucks plus the cost of shipping and insurance. )

I mean, given similar conditions of wind, current, likely target distance, nymph or dry, etc .... with my casting, (which is only adequate but effective) one rod does just about as well as another.  What seems to make the biggest difference for me is the line that I choose to load on the rod.

Of course nothing beats bamboo for emotional purity, .. that piece of grass gets everything down to the essence of why we love the whole thing of fly fishing ...  if fishing bamboo is not exactly holy, which I believe it is, it is at least as pure as anything I ever knew.

Going to go try for sleep now.
