Creek Information
« on: December 22, 2007, 08:14:59 PM »
Wondering if any of the forum members have information or experience fishing the creeks and rivers off HWY 56?:
(DeKalb, Warren, and Grundy Co.)/Pine Creek, Sink Creek, Mountain Creek, Charles Creek,Barren Fork, Hills Creek, and the Collins River section near Beershaba Springs
I am hoping to hit some of these systems this spring.
Happy Holidays

I started trout fishing while still in high school in the Pine and Sink Creek streams. LRM also caught his first trout in Pine Creek.

I have fished Sink, Mtn, and Charles for the last two years. I have only fished these streams during the spring stocking schedule along with everybody else and their brother.

It really is hard to understand how the trout manage to survive a 15'-20' backgainer off of the top of those bridges. I have seen 14" rainbows straight off the truck :o It helps to go during the week, but you better bring your own rock just in case.

Not all the stocking locations are on TWRA's map, that's a fact!

Thanks for the info, I usually fish the stocked creeks a month or so after the last official stocking date. By then you have the water to yourself.

I have fished Pine Creek and it fishes well during the stocking periods. Mid-week is best as it is not crowded.

BD and I caught some 20"+ fish in one of those creeks. Neither of us could say for sure if it was a fluke of maybe the fish do make it there. They all looked like they had been in a river and not a raceway. In the summer there is enough forage in this creek to raise 20 pound Trout.
Here’s one from that creek.

He came outa this hole right here.

And some other shoots from the spring creeks

I love to get my maps out and find new secluded water. If you do some R&D you'll discover some great spring creeks that have Trout (some argue that a few of these creeks have natural reproduction) and nobody around for a ways. If you go into these woods during warm weather beware of snakes. Rattlers and Copperheads are prevalent in these areas. From what little experience I've had with them Rattlers are the gentlemen of the woods, unless they are molting.... I've only ever seen a live copperhead once and he wasn't too aggressive either.

Looks like fun... Many of these creeks must have holdover trout with all of the spring fed sections and tons of insect life and minnows. I have done some local stream surveys with a seine and was amazed at the variety of stonefly, mayfly, hellgramites, crayfish, and minnow species in the systems.

Mike, I will still call on the 26th after I drive by Cane Creek and see how the water levels appear.

Nice looking run!
I will try to post some pictures soon.
In the meantime, check out google maps satellite images (Cane Creek VanBuren County) They have updated this section from Hwy 111 into Fall Creek Falls With some hi-resolution shots. The junction of 285 with HWY 30 north
is a productive stretch and runs into the Caney.

Yo, Curtis, is that Pine? Kinda looks like the upstream shot from the road crossing.
