Smallmouth Flies

I gave away most all my flies in 2007, been tying like crazy this week.

What are your have to have Smallmouth flies if you care to share?

I like wooly buggers tied in white with some flash as that is what I have had the most luck with. Mostly in size 8 & 10.

I want to know some new patterns as well. Looking forward to the activity on this thread.

I can't stand it (throwing streamers) anymore but growing up in Southern Ohio the Olive Matuka was the fly to fish.

Olive dyed grizzly hen feathers, gold rib, olive chenelle body. 10, 8, 6

Like the one below just in olive.

If you guys haven't tried Todd's Wiggle Minnow for smallies, you should.  It comes in at least a couple sizes, and fire tiger and crawdad colors are fantastic for smalliles.   Just be sure you use a loop knot so the fly can wiggle....

Oh yeah, try these on a light sink-tip or intermediate line for best results.

I’ll pick up a few wiggle minnows this year. I’ve been meaning to for over a year now…..

Scott have you ever tried the Tullis Wiggle bug? I tie them in all sorts of flavors (including with rattles) and have pretty good success using them. Largemouth LOVE them, but so do Trout. One thing I really like is the ability to make them large. I have a couple that I tied up in Hog Sucker colors for a Musky trip.

If you like the Wiggle Bug, you're going to love Wiggle Minnows.  They can be made large also, with multiple rattles inside.  I have an idea now to combine the 2 flies....[wheels turning....]

I'll send you some of these shortly, including RedHorse Sucker colors (another musky favorite).

The Wiggle Bug looks like an old plug that was made back in the 60's.  The eye was on top of the plug.  Todd's Wiggle Minnow is a fantastic fly!  It's very versatile.  Oh no, Mike, you've got the mad scientists wheels turning.  ;)
