Cumberland River 8/23
« on: August 23, 2006, 10:36:35 PM »
Got to the river about 12:30 or so this afternoon. Bait was abundant and relatively easy. Had the area to myself for the most part. The bite was a bit subtle and it took me a while to dial it in...but when I did the bite was good. I don't really know how many fish I caught between about 1:15 and 3:45 or so but I do know that I caught 5 on 5 successive passes lobbing into a specific location. I'm guessing that it was 15 +/-  fish in that time frame.  At one point a small school came up busting bait. I managed two out of the school before it ended. The bite shut down soon after the "get off at 3pm", after work crowd showed up. Most of the fish were in the 10 lb +/- class with a few pushing 15 and a couple 5 lb +/- fish.  Check out my thumb in the first photo below. The raw spot says it all for me.  ;D

That's what I'm talking about. Posts like this assure me there will always be a place for conventional gear in my garage. Thanks for teh report Tim. Now I just might have to rethink my weekend plans....

BTW some of those smaller ones look YUMMY!

Nahhhh I don't think so.... I really don't think you'd want to eat anything that came out of where I caught these. The water is pretty nasty!   ;D

It actually presents a bit of a dilemma for me that I was faced with on some of the larger fish yesterday. Since I was using 12# spinning tackle the larger fish took a while to land and with the H20 temps hovering around 80 it took some doing to revive them. Really felt like I was just fooling myself on that one though and it kinda made me feel like I was being hypocritical on the conservation side of things.

Right on!! That's the kind of action I like. I much prefer that kind of day to the hunt all day for one monster strike kind of day.

Way to go Tim! Weekday afternoon was it?
Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

Thanks Ron. Yep it was a weekday afternoon...for the next 3 months or so during the week is the only time I'll be able to sneak out for the most part due to band committments.

Have to agree with you that it's nice to have a day with lots of action. I enjoy catching the sea monsters...there's just nothing quite like seeing one of those beasts grab a skippie...it keeps my adrenaline going for days afterward.  Variety is the spice of life though and I definitely enjoy the "numbers" days just as much in a different way.  Downsize the equipment and the smaller, 5-10 lb size fish are a hoot too!
