After casting shooting heads a lot it’s obvious that rods can handle a lot more grain weight then the rated line. I’m thinking of building a bunch of shooting head style floating lines by cutting the taper off the end off some old floaters. For example for a 7 wt rod maybe use a 9 wt line with the taper cut off. I don’t’ think delicate presentation is an issue for what I have in mind (topwater bass and trout mousing) so the taper (extra weight) isn’t really needed. What I hope this line would do is punch big bushy, not so aerodynamic, topwater flies easily.
Also I casted a 350 grain clear tip intermediate Streamer Express the other day and loved it. BTW Jarrod I’ll give you your money on that line any day you want to get rid of it. Since Intermediate lines sometimes go real cheap I plan to make a few of them as well.
Have any of you guys ever tried this?
