Saturday at the Elk
« on: June 21, 2008, 04:33:26 PM »
We had a good day at the Elk today.  Water at the dam was 57 degrees and it appeared from first glance that there were not a lot of folks there.  We got in the water and started moving down the river...about that time folks started coming from everywhere it seems! I like to fish that first riffle....it hides my un-stealthiness.  I was fishing a sz 20 Adams because they kept hitting the top. Picked up one small brown and missed several. Got tired of squinting trying to find my fly so I tied on a Tennessee Wulff.  Caught 2 nice rainbows that put up a good fight.  The second was colored up very nicely. (I will post a pic after I take a nap!)
My husband had caught several and we got out and got a snack.  Got back in to fish the run right above the bridge and it started to rain...then it started to thunder....this was our sign to get out of the water.
Not a lot of fish but a good day!

Love those small Adams on the Elk.  When they are hitting those, they can be real picky - actually surprised with the success with the Wulff.

yes Mike...I was pretty puzzled with the reaction to the Wulff as well.  As one of my buddies likes to say..."I just figured it was time to throw a Hershey bar at em!"  I was tired of squinting at the tiny Adams so I figured what the heck!  They slammed it too....no subtle takes!

Great report, thanks for posting. That thunder off in the distance is a good warning that you need to leave but for some reason I always think, ahh it'll go around me..... :o
