For me the past four days were awesome to watch. My dream has always been to fish on the pro level and will probably always be just that............. a dream.
With only three tournaments left on the schedule the Bassmaster Elite were in Hendersonville, TN this past week/weekend fishing the Tennessee Triumph presented by Long Horns restaurant a four day tournament on Old Hickory Lake. This was a crucial stop on the trail in regards to points going toward qualifying for the Bassmaster Classic and Angler of the Year. There were 100 plus pros and equal amount of co-anglers. The conditions they met Thursday thru Saturday were hot and tough only to get a slight break with Sunday morning’s rain. Usually on Old Hickory this time of year the bite goes deep and relates close to the channel or ledges. They found the bite to be quite different. Most of the fish turned in were caught shallow. It amazes me to watch these pros work. Seriously, they can catch fish in a mud puddle during a hail storm. Kevin Wirth (a Kentucky native) led from weigh in on the first day and never looked back with a winning weight of 55 pounds 10 ounces. He was only ahead of Rick Clunn by just 3 pounds going into to final day and this time of year on this lake that’s a big difference. As long as Kevin caught a limit it would be tough for anyone to catch him and that was exactly what he did. This was Kevin’s first win in about 14 years and he took home a nice $100,000 purse plus some much need points. All in all a great weekend of meet and greets with the pros who are all class act guys.
By the way, anyone living in the Hendersonville or Gallatin communities should be very proud. Everyone involved with the tournament had nothing but praise for both in their hospitality. I know I will definitely welcome them back anytime. Hopefully, we will become a yearly tour stop.
