3HP outboard for canoe
« on: July 03, 2008, 10:21:43 AM »
I have a canoe that's rated for up to a 3hp.  the canoe itself weighs about 85lbs and loaded up with 2 guys and gear we're pushing around 400-450.  Couple of questions - 1) would a 3hp, or 2hp push us up the caney with 1 generator running and 2) suggestions on where to get a nice used outboard (or new as a last resort).  Thanks.

5 HP, you'll need it.

I agree with Grumpy, but if you decide to look at a 3hp, I've got two Gamefisher 3hp motors that are about to go in the 'for sale' section.  You're more than welcome to borrow one of them to try it out.  Other than being a little on the loud side, they're decent little motors (for the money).

Outboards and canoes are like beer and motorcycles. It’s all fun and games till someone gets hurt.  ;D

We have a friend that HAD one similar to what you are talking about and he had pretty good luck with it but kept pointing out that powered canoes and fast moving water just dont get along well together.
