Swivels?
« on: August 07, 2008, 01:21:10 PM »
OK streamer-design geniuses, I got one for you.

Does anybody use swivels for streamers? I've been fishing some big, bulky, rattly-wiggly flies, & with longer casts or when windy, I'm getting some twist, so I tried putting a swivel between the leader-butt & the fly-line. Some of my tandem flies also have swivels on the stinger hook, which also reduces twist (& reduces the chance that the front-hook "un-hooks" the rear-hook while fighting a fish). Seems to work fine, & does reduce twist, but I'm afraid with a tight loop turning over, I'm gonna torque that swivel & it may eventually break. Any thoughts/suggestions on this? Thanks!

use a sampoo (sp?) ball bearing type. They are about a $1.00 or so each but, the will spin when a cheap barrel swivel won't.

Yep what Dub said.

Have you tried the Rappala(loop knot) attached to the fly?

Guys, appreciate the tips.

The Rapala knot is stiffer & not quite as strong as the non-slip mono-loop knot; I think you should always use it over the Rapala knot.  I use it on all streamers, as it really does let the fly wiggle better (plus it's one of the strongest knots out there).  But I'm getting twist so I've been trying Sampo ball-bearing swivels; seems to work, so far.  But I'm worried that over time, the swivel wire will flex, and eventually a wire that is flexed back & forth a zillion times will break.  I'm afraid it won't break till I have a huge fish on.  I'm now looking at those really solid-looking Spro swivels here: http://www.jmtackle.com/browse.cfm/2,341.html
Anybody tried these?
