I finally got him!!!
« on: July 24, 2008, 07:21:55 AM »
Our resident Caney Fork Eagle let me get close a few times the other day. What a magnificent creature.

These are straight out of the camera resized to 800x800 jpg. I shot them with my 400mm no filter in a moving boat with a 4 stroke outboard running (heavy vibration), no tripod. I’m sure I can PS these and crop them from the original size and come up with some decent shots but I’m left wondering if I’m going to have to drop $3000 to get a lens that can produce the results I’m looking for.

Very nice capture Mike and the answer on the lens question is likely yes.

BTW, is there a bird in the last picture or is that just scenery? You know my ancient eyes may be playing tricks on me.

Yes there is a bird. I put that there to give a reference to the giant wingspan of this guy or gal.

Nice, I think those are some good shots taken from a moving boat!

Hey Mike....
Love the shots.  Eagles are just cool aren't they? I was in Dutch Harbor Alaska last fall and there are eagles everywhere up there.  They are as common up there as seeing a mockingbird or something like that down here.  We took tons of pictures of them and the locals were just rolling their eyes at us.
Attached is my favorite one. It was taken from a long distance with a p & s so it has been resized and cropped. I was hoping he would let me get a little closer but he took off!

I hope you were able to float one of those rivers on Kodiak when you were in Dutch Harbor - that should have been time for the leg-size bows.  BTW - did you get to see the Time Bandit, the Northwestern, the Cornelia Maria, the North American, etc...????

Now, you are going to force me to dig up my slide of 26 eagles in one tree I caught on an Island off Ketchikan a few years ago.

Hey Mike...
I got to go out on the Time Bandit. The Hillstrand boys are some of the nicest folks you will ever meet.  We had a great time with them! I met Phil's sons from the Cornelia Maria and Phil showed up briefly. I work for Sysco Foods and we were up there to see the king crab operation.  We ate mounds of king crab while were up there...it was amazing! Unfortunately, I did not get to fish while I was up there but I would love to go back.  Alaska is a truly beautiful place!

This is me on the deck of the Time Bandit....notice the door over my left shoulder....it is a dry sauna that the guys can get in between runs.  That's certainly something they never show you on the show!

Way TOO KEWLLL!!!

They actually did show the dry sauna in one episode - they were showing it to a greenhorn.

Now, I think I'm going to have to hang myself!  I don't watch much TV and there isn't an awful lot that my daughter and I agree upon watching when I do watch it, but Dangerous Catch is one of four.  The other are Dirty Jobs, Ice Road, and Bear Grylls.  My favorite show of all time is "Alone in the Wilderness". It was about a guy name Dick Proenneke, a 52 year old guy who decides to move up there with almost nothing but an axe and matches, making everything himself, living there for 30+ years, filming his life so I can live vicariously through him and daydream of the day I might be able to do that.  I'm 52 this year and boy do I have the itch!!  If I told her I knew someone who had been on one of the King and Opelio Crab boats - she'd kill me.  I have always dreamed of working up there, but have not been able to pull it off yet!  Was too young for the Alaska Pipeline, wife put the hiatus on possible missionary work up there, and I'm sure I'm not tough enough to pull off being a deck hand on the crabbers.  Maybe they'd like a cook!

That's a nice Photo Rachel. Pretty cool getting to meet those crabbers I bet. Now I've got that darned Bon Jovi song stuck in my head... Dead or Alive.
