Gar fishing and one huge catifsh!
« on: July 27, 2008, 06:11:29 PM »
Today I had the pleasure if fishing with Fellow Guide and outdoor writer Richard Simms of Scenic City Fishing Charters,www.scenicCityfishing.com. I caught lots of gar on my fly rod but as part of the deal I had to catfish with the master while I was there. Boys I am a die hard fly fisherman but dammit  this blue cat almost jerked me out of the boat.

Nice one Troy :o. Simms used to come around but he disappeared. Might be too fly fishy around here. ???

Nice cat Troy,

If anyone ever pops over to TK's site Fishingtn.com, Richard has a great story posted from a guide trip where he had to dive in and fight a cat on his terms.

That gar is flat out beautiful. I have never seen gar around here look that good.

Curtis, you hit the nail on the head there. That tail has incredible colors on it.

Now on to that MONSTER cat, great job Troy. Tell Mr. Simms we don't bite too much and to come back and visit some time.

Looks like a blast!

We got into our first flyrod/gar encounters about a week ago, and I was quite pleased with how willingly they will chase a fly down.  Now, if we could get more hookups... ::)...we're working on that.
I bet that big blue pulled like a submarine.  What a beast!

I've got to try that gar-ff'n out sometime.  I read your TVO write-up earlier this week - thanks for the occasional flyfishing pieces - particularly interesting was waiting for the gar head-turn tip before setting the 'rope'.

Hey a question for you gar fellas - do you all 'tease' out the end of the rope much to promote tangling?  Also, when you go to the sinktip to get down for the bigger ones, do you see a difference in success for casting in front of vs. behind other smaller visible gars near the surface?

Awesome stuff Troy.  Thanks for sharing!
