Blackfoot River, MT-Salmon Fly
« on: July 27, 2008, 12:02:15 PM »
adamtn's post about his giant stone fly reminded me of a picture Joel just sent me. A salmon fly on the Blackfoot a few days ago.

There were a few good salmon fly days on the region's rivers around here, but most of them were blown out and very high with late snow melt during the big bug arrival.

There are a few lingering around, but the fish aren't really keyed in on them anymore. Still, a cool bug. Here's Joel's picture.  That's his new Boulder Boatworks drifter in the back ground. It's a pretty danged sweet boat.

Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

Funny you say that. I asked the same thing. Turns out it's the seat back.

I had a Salmonfly climb up my leg on the Madison last summer, first I had seen.  It was 3" long!  Startled the h--- out of me.   More green than that bug too.
In June we get a nice golden stone hatch on Snowbird, some are 2" long.  They did seem more scarce this year, guessing because of last year's drought?
Anyway, wish I were out there with ya Ron!
Best,
John
