Elk River Report 8/19/08
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:38:11 AM »
I fished the Elk on Tuesday afternoon. The fishing was a little slow...which was good; I had the river to myself for part of the afternoon. Didn't catch anything over 10 inches. Caught fish on #20 zebra midge and a #16 soft hackle. I have a question: A "lot" of fish darted at my soft hackle as it surfaced (emerged) but never touched it. I have never had this happen as often. Any helpful suggestions or ideas?

First off welcome to the board!

Did they strike at it or just go take a look?

Might try stripping it faster. Sometimes letting them see you’re offering to closely can be a bad thing, especially in slow water.

Steve, They appeared to be striking because of their speed, but they would not hit it at all; just dart past it.
Mike, Thanks for the information. It was slow water.

Good advice there. Just speed it up, that will force an instinctual attack as opposed to a sip.
