It's official. I retired today.
« on: October 19, 2006, 05:53:02 PM »
Went with Michelins this time. Not cheap, but probably less expensive than the Goodyear Wranglers that wore out on me in 30,000 miles. I was execting those tires to run 45K, but not even close. Rotations, balance, alignment, shocks all kept in good maintenance, but they just didn't last. Idling through school zones felt like you were riding a roller coaster.

They feel good going down the road too. I have talked to 4 different truck owners and they swear by these tires. I've never had Michelins on a pickup before. I hope I'm not posting sour grapes in a year.

Anybody want to share an encouraging tire story?
Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

Which Michelins did you put on there Ron?  They have a very broad range of coverage and the expectations vary significanlty from one end to the other!!

Ron, do you happen to know which Goodyear tires you had on the truck? Just curious as I'm looking at "retiring" soon on the Ford-a-saurus and though I've had (by my measure anyhoo) excellent results with the 2 sets of Goodyears on the truck with 60K+ miles on each set w/o completely to snuff maintenance that model is no longer made for some reason...sure don't want to buy whatever model it was you just replaced.

Funny but I just don't hear much good about Goodyear anymore. What happened? I am a Bridgestone man myself. I love the Dueler Revo. Very aggressive tread but handles pavement like a performance tire. The have the best rated all terrain tires on TireRack.com out of all of them.
I think you'll be very pleased with your choice too.

I had 70,000 on my last set of Michelins & they wee reday to be swapped, got 48,000 on this set on the Hemi, they aren't going to make it much longer, the factory set never does seem to last as long to me.
I checked on Michelins & Bridgestones last week as i was getting a flat fixed, it's a tough decision, save a few bucks or spend more & get more mileage.

Tim-The Goodyears were the Wrangler AT. Scroll down here and you'll find them. I see on the website they have several versions of Wranglers. Maybe some of the others are great, but mine weren't. http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyeartireselector/results_tire.jsp?mrktarea=Light+Truck

Leo-The Michelins are the LTX AT- http://www.michelinman.com/overview/ltx_a_t/26.html

The M/S tire would probably last longer on the highway though.

Never had any Bridgestones. It was Goodyear, BF Goodrich and Michelin in our area when I was growing up. You saw a few Firestones around, but not like today and in this area of the country.

Hey Ron, you will like those LTX's...wish I had a nickel for each one of those that I have sold over the years.   secret to them and all tires is inflation, rotation, balance, alignment..specially on 4WD's...

I didn't know you were a tire man!! I was a tire man all through high school and about half of college.

Yep, for most of my working career, I was devoted to the Auto Servivce inudstry, primarily undercar services, writing of training programs, training in sales and service, and management of units (multi-unit) and since tires represented well over 60% of any stores product sales and inventory...had to stay abreast of all of that stuff!!

I must admit...I DON'T  miss it now that I am back in Tennessee and close to what I really love...Fly fishing and rod building!!  But every once in a while, I will take a walk through one of the local stores and I have to stick my head into the Stockroom just to get a whiff of all that new inventory....

I hear you about the whiff of new inventory. My garage smelled like a backroom full of brand new tread this morning.

I went out there to go to work this morning. About 60 seconds later, Sugar Callous opens the door from the house to the garage and says "What...are you doing?"

She caught me fondling my new treads, breathing deeply, and talking sweetly. I told her I was just checking to make sure they had mounted them correctly.

She said "Really? Well, that's good, 'cause for a minute there I thought you were kissing that tire and whispering sweet nothings."

Silly woman.

By the way, anybody know how to get black stuff off of your face if you don't happen to have any Lava soap handy?

Yes, repeat this to your wife. "You look like the goodyear blimp in that dress and where in Gods name did you get those shoes, the county fair? She'll smack that stuff off right your face.
