Oh man...this could be trouble...
« on: October 23, 2006, 04:42:41 PM »
I ran across these guys in a thread on Seein' Stripes....if there was ever a jet boat I could love this would be it....man,what a boat!! This just might really be the ultimate "go anywhere" boat.  You know something's up when the boat comes with wheels on the stern, an electric winch on the bow with a remote control and a grab rail welded to the outside of the gunnel!   ;D

You guys are killing me with all these jet boats.

The wheels and the winch only make sense to me. Just like a 4x4 truck or Jeep or Scout--The only difference in getting stuck in a 4x4 vs a two wheel drive, is you are usually much farther from the main road and help when you finally get stuck in a 4x4.

That's how I see this monster jet. It'll get you so far up a creek without a paddle, or water, that you're gonna need that winch and wheels to get back to wet gravel.  I'd like to give it a try, anyway!! ;D

That orange stuff on the bottom, UHMW stuff, is what I've been trying to figure out how to attach to the bottom of a boat for a couple of years now.

The stuff is machineable, slick and nearly "abrasion proof".

Nothing sticks to it. Glue won't work. I have always seen it installed with screws or rivets or some kind of mechanical fastener. IN my opinion, not the best choice for the bottom of a boat. I don't care how good you seal a hole below the waterline, once the integrety of the hull is breached, it's going to leak eventually, and cause problems. Period. Don't guess it's a problem with aluminum though. Not like it's going to cause it to delaminate or rot.

Last night, after reading this thread, I searched out the stuff again and found one company that has figured out a way to oxidize one side of a sheet of it, when then renders that side bondable. They have made a "tape" out of the stuff. I put a phone call in to the company to find out what it costs.

Cool boat Tim.

Funny thought--When we are bank bound, we wish we had a boat to get to the fish. When we have a boat, we wish it would get shallower so we could get to the fish.

On the surface it nearly seems ironic. I had to explain to Sugar Callous-When you are bank bound, you are bound. When you are in a boat, you may fish the bank edges, or the middle, or two hundred yards or 20 miles away. Mobility is mo betta..
Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

Well Ron, if'n you really want to know how to make it bond....here's how to do it:

1. treat the  the metal surface with zinc phosphate

2. Find somone that has some UHMWPE sheet that has been modified with maleic anhydride.

3. Using a heat gun or something similar heat the pre-prepared strips or whatever shape you want to bond to the hull heat the material to a temperature in the range of 115-120 C and apply UHMWPE to the metal surface. Clamp them together or otherwise provide some mechanical force to hold the two together. Doesn't have to stay long...maybe 5 minutes tops.

The maleic anhydride will react with the zinc phospate and create a molecular level mechanical bond between the UHMWPE and metal surface.

Geek lesson of the day complete!  ;D

Actually when I was looking at how those are fastened to the hull the other day I was thinking that I'd sure prefer that the openings either weren't there or that they were sealed which wouldn't be too tough to do with a similar sort of approach using UHMWPE rods instead of sheet.

Another way to accomplish this would be with a small friction welder....but I digress....I should get to work.

Exactly Banddad, that's what I was going to suggest.... ;D
