I'm always playing around with different grain wts on my rods. I have used this many times but never posted it.
I don't find this real useful for picking a shooting head as I like to overline my rods for shooting heads. For example I throw a 250 or 350 on my 7wt. It has to be a fast rod like an XP or my Dan Craft FT to throw a 350 but it will do it nicely. I also use a Dan Craft 10wt FT for throwing 500 and 600 grain lines when I need to sink to 20' fast or troll in 15'.
Letting some line feed out through your line hand on the back cast will help from shocking your rod or breaking it with these heavy lines. Also don’t aerialize a lot of line, and watch that back cast and wait for it to straighten out before you start the forward cast.. That's usually the biggest "tadaaa" moment for my clients when I tell them to do those things.
