Rocks in the Holston
« on: February 15, 2009, 09:15:06 PM »
I have a 16 Xpress flatbottom with a 60hp jet.  This set-up still has trouble in the lower holston.  I knocked a hole in the bottom this weekend.  Has anyone ever heard of putiing some kind of plastic wear strips on boat bottom to protect a little from rocks ??

Line-x spray can help but will add some weight.... it is like an 1/8 of an inch thick epoxy layer..  helps  but not a loaded boat full boar on rocks...  nothing will stop you from damage there.

I like Brandon's advice on LineX and I may use it on the Supreme someday. However you should check out this guy's site for a conversion kit.

UHMWPE is the way to go, based on what I've read and researched.

I experimented with it some, but never had the skills or place or time to take it to the level of the guy in the post that Mike just linked.  That is pretty cool.
Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the replies.

In following the link, it seems like that guy in Penn. has perfected what I was thinking about.
I would sure like to have this but after reading I am a little intimidated by the "23 step process" to attached the UHMW strips to the boat.  I am going to contact him and see what he gets $ for a boat that comes with this "factory applied" protection.
Well for now, I'll be back to the aluminum welding shop this week for another bandaid.

I talked to John a few weeks back.  He said the new skiff could may be out by May.  The boat is roto-molded HDPE... http://www.hogislandboatworks.com/roto-molded-HDPE-drift-boats.html

I just bet this new boat from Hog Island reshapes the fishing world.  I was completely sold on his boats the day I took my HI drifter down the Pigeon River.  Hardcore boats!
