Fishing Report 3/9/09

Bad day today.  I saw only one fish landed in 3 1/2 hours and it wasn't me!!  No one was hooking up with anything.  Flyfishers were in the majority tossing anything and everything!!  I did talk to one gentleman that reported that he had caught 4 in 5 hours.  8 - 10 flyfisher @ 4 hours each = 32 - 40 hours and only 5 total fish brought to hand!!
When someone reports, with photo's, that there are fish there I may try it again!  From now on I'm fishing the Duck!!

After yesterday's lousy trip to the river for us, I would like to ask some questions --

1.  Was it the bright sunny day?

2.  Was it the ambient air temp (warm)?

3.  Was it the shocking of the fish last week?

4.  Was it the fishing stocking last week?

5.  Was it the diet of the stocked fish?

6.  Who knows what else?

Anyhow a very frustrating trip for us to the Elk.  Hopefully, it improves soon, but I am not confident that it will.

when i was in tn visiting the last two years i couldn't believe how crowded it has gotten on the elk. On a weekday there were @ least 15 cars at the dam. Three years ago you could pretty much have it to yourself on a weekday, besides a couple of regulars.

 Seems like the fishing pressure is increasing rapidly. If there were 10 people at the dam on a monday imagine how bad sunday was. If they were spread out all the way down to paintball, thats only like 1.5 miles of river. I think that the elk is just suffering from overcrowding and lack of access points as well as the temp issues.

I did observe a large school of fish yesterday.  At first I thought it was just a patch of stirred up bottom drifting toward me but when it got close I saw it was 4 - 5 inch fish, 50 to 100 of them.   This indicates newly stocked fish but it will be several months before they grow up!

Jack, it is my understanding that all of the Elk River fish found a secret aquaduct and have migrated to Colorado!  :o

Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

Today was redemption day.  47 caught and released on the Duck River between 1 pm and 6 pm.   I caught 30 on the same fly before retiring it.

Roberts618 caught and released another 23 for a total of 70 for the day!

For a small renumeration we may even tell you where, hehehehehe!! ;D

Copies of the most productive fly are only $25.00. ;)
