Trolling Motors
« on: March 18, 2009, 09:02:01 PM »
I've had two Minn Kota's, didn't keep either one long enough to wash the new off. A  Maxxum 55 on the Classic and a PowerDrive 55 on the LT25.

Didn't get enough stick time on the PowerDrive to know if I love it or just like it. My unscientific opinion is Gheenoes are not the straightest  tracking boat after you kill all power. So I was always having to play with the motor to straighten us up. I never did get the drag chain out and use it.

I could see where the PD would shine, just to move you to where you need to be in the current with the chain dragging.

Will the 48" be enough or should I go with the 54"  shaft ???

Lets here your opinions and wisdom on brands and types.

48 should be plenty.
Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

48 will be fine as long as the heavier person is on the front deck :o

I've not fished out of a gheenoe so I don't know how well it might translate..or not...BUT...two options that I have come to LUV on my MK t/m's are the autopilot and copilot features.  Might be overkill for your application, or might not, I dunno, but I know that they are great for what I do. For example facing upcurrent I can set a speed and compass heading and the t/m will more or less just hold the boat right there...and of course going downstream it's darn handy just to not have to be constantly watching the heading.  I can see where the Copilot would be of less value in a vessel where you're not up wandering around inside the boat on a regular basis but for me it allows me to be anywhere in the boat tending a line and still control the motor.

As to brands I've had MG and MK and won't own another MG so long as MK keeps doing what they have been doing.  For what it's worth I got a new MK over the winter and have to say I like the new stow/deploy feature a lot better. You can actually do either pretty much one handed finally.
