Elk River nov 13
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:44:40 PM »
I fished the elk river today and had a good day for numbers, no fish of much size. I fished near the dam for a while and did well there catching a lot of stocker sized fish. After lunch i decided to find some seclusion and a long walk found it. I caught fewer fish at the second spot but caught a couple of nice ones for the elk about 16". The flies that were hot were trout candy nymphs and flashy greeen wooly buugers. It ain't the caney but it was still a good day

How was the water color?

With the caney running like it is, I would say the elk is going to be a favorite for a while .

the water was a little bit cloudy, but they had generated that morning. The second spot we fished still had a little high water dropping out for a while after we got there.

I was up at the dam this morning, and was going to come home and post a question about this, I have lived my whole life near this river (48 years) and for the past few years it would get cloudy in the fall for a while, seems the generation would straighten it back out, now it has been cloudy all year, even with it generating this morning I couldn'd see maybe 2 feet deep.

Any water scientist on the board ?????

I figure maybe all the gazillion homes that have been built around the shore, some say its the sewage discharge from Winchester ????

Woodsman I am no scientist but "usually" the fall color change is the lake turning over. I don't know why it would be off color all year. It might related to the new O2 system above the dam churning up silt off the bottom???

I don't know that it is or isn't the case here but certainly nutrient rich (fertilizers etc) run-off from new construction and the other associated nutrient rich waste (processed waste water) can and do result in algae blooms that will change water color/transparency.  Look at Priest for example..when I was a teenager the water there was very clear, it's far from it now...the same applies at Center Hill for that matter though to a somewhat lesser degree.  If I'm not mistaken (and I may well be!)  a significant increase in the algae levels that might also result in lower DO levels too...on the flip side higher algae levels should be good for shad production...once again..look at Priest..it didn't earn the nick-name "shad factory" for nothing.  ;)

and the "snot" that grows on the rocks during this time, stinks so at times it will make you want to throw up and I have a tough stomach.

Grumpy,

8 to 10 years ago, I sight fished to most ever fish I caught, was big into Midging, as it clouded up went the other direction and started dredging it with Streamers.
