Perceived Value
« on: November 20, 2006, 07:48:10 AM »
While putting my Dancraft together yesterday I noticed a very significant scratch on the last section just above the ferrule. I have no idea how it got there.  After some inspection I decided it was only a surface scratch but I was a bit worried because this is a VERY thin walled blank. Well about five casts into a trip to the Obey yesterday it snapped while casting it. Dan will replace it and I’ll build it back but now I’m two hours away from home and without a rod. My buddy Craig says hey I got a $29 Wal Mart SA rod in the truck, I’ll go get it. Well I was not real excited about using a $29 fly rod but what the heck, I wasn’t going home either. After about three casts I started thinking how well this rod casts. Then halfway into the day I start seriously wondering why people are paying $600 for rods when a $29 works so well. I was so impressed that I started looking at the wraps and giving it a quality check. First thing I notice is a metal winding check. Then I notice the wraps are tight and the finish is level and a Fuji Graphite reel seat (very practical just not pretty). The cork is as good as most high end rods I see and the green blank looks a lot like a big name blank that cost a lot more. I told Craig I’d like to do an experiment where I put a nice reel seat and a “X company” sticker on this rod and told someone it was the latest greatest rod from “X company” and it costs $700. Then listen to the comments about how great it is and how much better it is then the old one. I thought how funny that would be to hear that person rave about a $700 rod that only costs $29. Then I realized I was one of those people…

I think Craig summed it up nicely when he said “perceived Value”.

BTW my next rod will most likely be an Xi2….

Thoughts???

A story for off line, but bout all I have to say about that is:

1) Sage Z axis, very lightly used  $500

2)  Winston BIIx Used just slightly more  $475

Crap...gotta say this too!!  I was told once by a fly fisherman, not quite sure which one told me this, but I think we all know him, that he didn't really want to be seen fishing a Cortland ...nothing but  _ _ _ _  for him!!  seems to me that people like that aren't out there for fishing..they are out there for phishing....

Bill shooting Trout with a muzzleloader is almost as unethical as fishing the redds.  :o

ya'll don't tell anyone, BP finally cast a rod the other day that he could cast :o course, it was less than $200, i'm thinking about marking it up to $625 & offering him a 10% discount on it to make him feel like he's getting over on me ;D

Looks like I need to mount a gun rack on the SSMinnow4Now.

I do miss my black powder shooting. Good, dirty, boomy, smoke filled fun!!
Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."
