breaux and the Duck River!
« on: May 22, 2009, 10:44:16 PM »
breaux joined me today in an attempt to give sore lips to every fish in the Duck River and I think we may have done just that!!  Fiesty fat Rainbows, Blue Gills of all sizes and a very nice LMB!!  He had a hard time believing he caught a LMB, the largest 'bow of the day and 'gills out of the same hole!

I rigged him up with a 7' fluorocarbon furled leader and my killer "Red Eyed Olive Wolly Bugger and believe me folks it was a "One fly Day"!!  I tried other wet fly's but no dice, they just wanted the "Killer"!

We set out about 9 am. and I was amazed at how much the river has changed since the heavy duty discharge.  My favorite "Take a Break" log was gone.  2/3 of the gravel bar is gone and there is a new one in my favorite Bream hole!

We took a break at noon for roast beef sandwiches and cold drinks then did it again!  It was a little slow at start and we spread out.  He went down stream and got into a mess of "gill's but the 'bow's were starting to stack up in one area (Where it's been know to happen) and I just got stuck catching and didn't want to move!

It was one great day and sharing it with breaux made it even better.  Even though we lost count of the fish we caught we did end up with no "Wind Knots" and the fly we started with!  Just flat worn out (well at least I was as I'm about twice his age!).

Sorry I forgot my camera!!

So, I'm guessing the Red Eyed Olive Wooly Bugger is now selling for $10.00 stream side?   ;D
How much for just a picture of it?

Great report on a great day.

We got runoffed out today. Was warm yesterday and the night stayed well above freezing so it seemed like every bit of snow on the mountain was trying to runoff at once.

Beautiful day though.
Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

The Red Eyed Olive Wolly Bugger.

10 wraps of .020 lead wire and red ultra chenille tied in for the eye.

I went back to the same spot on the Duck today and caught a dozen more in an hour.  The first one while stripping line out to make a cast!

I will second Jack's assessment of the day!  I don't get much time off to fish so when i did, i was really greatful that Jack was able to help me out and show me around the Duck.  I am a true beleiver in his furled leaders!  A largemouth and a rainbow in the same hole!  I wouldn't have beleived it if i wasn't there to experience it.  Thanks again Jack for a great use of a vacation day!

Thanks Jack, the check is in the mail.  ;D

Reminds me of a Martini Olive. A hairy Martini Olive.

I went to the duck today for the first time and didn't fair as well. I tied some of those flies up and caught lots of bluegill, bass, and crappie, but no trout. I guess I couldn't find the holes you are speaking about. Only my first time out though.
