Pentax Cameras
« on: June 16, 2009, 10:04:59 AM »
I was thinking about pulling the trigger on a Pentax W-60. I believe I read some reviews on it and everybody thought it was a good camera. Is that still the consensus out there? Thanks in advance. I like the site and forum and decided to sign up. Thanks again.

From what I have heard, yes. If you hit the search, you can find what everyone is saying (all positive from what I remember).

I have an earlier waterproof pentax optio ... and it has been a great little camera ... the waterproofing has held up thru a fair amount of abuse on my part ... I was going thru a digital camera every 9 months or so until I bought this camera about three years ago ... when/if this one ever does die on me, I'll not hesitate to buy another one ...

I wouldn't be without mine.  It's got numerous functions, it's compact, and it takes some pretty darned nice shots. I just keep mine in a soft case with a caribiner(sp?) clipped to my vest or backpack tethered with a cord in case it gets dropped in the water.  It barely gets in the way, and you lose the paranoia of water damage/storage of an high performance costly lens system.

That being said:  If I ever get a boat with adequate storage and my finances allow it, I will invest in a professional grade camera, and pick the brains of some of the photographers on this forum.  The range of focus and the fine detail of some of the higher end Sonys and Nikons just can't be compared with the Optio...but that's for later.

I have a Pentax W-60 and can say it's a GREAT little camera.  I use it all the time even tho I have a nice Canon DSLR available.  It takes wonderful pictures and even does a decent job of capturing motion (casts, baseball throws, etc.) if you leave it in Sports mode.

The only thing I haven't really done much with it is take underwater photos.  The idea is to take a picture of Mr. Trout after release.  A lady fisherperson up here also has a W-60 and has a priceless photo showing a just released rainbow with a couple of other nice trout she didn't know were there lurking in the background.

I've never heard a negative thing about them, have heard they were having financial problems though, these days, who isn't :-\

I like mine, a lot.

Small, like TW said, more functions than I'll ever use. Auto functions are great. You have the option to manual focus/flash etc.

After drowning two other cameras I hooked up and just don't worry about it anymore.

Yesterday, I was at the bottom. I was at the bottom of a valley, in the river. Then my eyes hiked up the mountains to the snow capped peaks. I thought, "When I am at this lowest place I can be, standing in a river, everything is looking up."

I have had a pentax optio 43wr since the first year they were made..first one died , a non-violent but complete death,  after five years in the field on all fishing and bird hunting trips (a LOT of abuse) and I luckily had a friend who never used his identical cmaeraand talked him in to a bargain sale..seciond one is on , I am guessing, the fourth year.   I have also purchased a newer waterproof pentax but Iswear it does not take the pictures the old ones take...perhaps pilot error.
