Gatlinburg Area questions?
« on: June 29, 2009, 07:45:16 PM »
A friend of mine and I are talking about taking a trip around either August or October.

First off, which month is better fishing?

Where would be a place we could camp and fish without a tough back woods hike?

Mainly, we are looking for numbers not really size, stockers would more than work for us with a few hold-overs possible and not interested in the native brookies at this time.

Both of us are pretty new to fly fishing and have only a few years under our belt mainly on the Caney/Obey. So, we would like to steer clear of the real technical streams if at all possible.

Late August is good due to the vacation season for families is winding down due to school starting back up. The Greenbriar area west of G-burg still fishes good with lots of bows and brook trout. Shady streams and easy access without much hiking.
October is usually nice weather, low humidity and bluebird skies. October caddis (orange) are on the streams. Elkmont is popular with trail hikers and fishermen. The roads will be crowded with leaflookers heading to the park as well.
Easy fishing for stocker bows up to around 20" in Gatlinburg and along the spur between PF and G-burg is good . Just be prepared for lots of loud motorcycles and other traffic on the roads anytime your here.
Make your camping or motel reservations early if coming in October.
