Rods for thought

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking for a 7 wt in the 9-9.5' range for throwing streamers and bass bugs. Kinda partial to Winston, but would be open to others. Throw some suggestions based on your experiences. I will be test casting in the near future and havent seen alot of talk about rods in this size range. Thanks for your input.

I'm partial to 10ft rods.  If you go with a Winston you can get an 11ft rod in a 7wt BIIX.  You'll be glad you did, the longer rods are far less work than the 9 footers.  I like G.Loomis GLX's and St. Criox Ultra legends, too.  The St. Croix's are a great buy.

I am partial to winston rods myself ... and while I love my 4wt BIIx ... my 6wt BIIx is only a "good" streamer rod ... it throws a floating line and a sink-tip line extremely well, but a heavier fast-sinking line causes it some problems ... the tip section is a little too soft and collapses just bit on long casts ... I still love casting the 6wt BIIx, but I find Sage's Xi2 series just a bit better as a streamer rod ...

I'm not sure at the moment what Winston offers in the MX series, that would make an awesome streamer rod though.

For the past three years, my streamer rod (real streamers that is) has been an 8wt Orvis Zero Gravity. IT handles all the lines that I might be fishing whether we're talking floating big bass bugs, or deep 350 sinking lines for trout and other critters.

Plus, with it's light weight....it's much more comparable to throwing a 5 or 6 wt all day as opposed to the 8wt.

For Trout Streamers and a 250 grain line the rod I pick up 9 out of 10 times is going to be my Sage Xi2 6 wt.

Ok I will throw an additional opinion here... You owe it to yourself to test cast the Echo 2 series rods. I think Fly South is the only local dealer. I have 5 of them and they are a pleasure to fish.
