Hey Thumper (or any other jet authority)
« on: September 08, 2009, 11:00:19 PM »
So while letting the paint on the boat dry I started digging around on the motor.  I removed the grate and sleeve and noticed that all 8 shims are on the bottom of the impeller.  This being a 2000 model I figured no one had adjusted the shims.  After trying about an hour to get the impeller off I know no one has adjusted it.  Do you know how to remove a stuck impeller?  By tapping on the shaft and pulling the impeller I have it to the end of the shaft but can't get it the rest if the way, I soaked it with WD40 and leaving it overnight.  Also I have read on jetoutboard.com about the proper gap to have between the wear plate and impeller but, how do you check it?  I assume you move some shims to the back of the impeller and reassemble and check again.  Thanks for any help you can give me.

Lawnman you may pickup some speed once you reshim the impeller.  You also need to sharpen the impeller edges with a file.

To remove it from the shaft may require a swift well placed blow with a hammer.  :o

Between the impeller shaft and impeller should be a thin teflon sleeve.  This sleeve is designed to allow from easier removal.

I once removed my impeller with the aid of a C clamp lined with a heavy peice of rubber (old car floor mat).  I attatched the clamp with rubber to the impeller blade at a thicker section.  Then tapped on the C clamp with a hammer which loosened it from the shaft.  If you  are working with your motor in a vertical postion (like on the transom) be careful not to allow you impeller to fall off and hit the ground once it comes loose from the shaft.  Hope this helps. ;D

tie motor off to tree, run rope through porpellr & hook to truck, do this over a sand pit, as Glenn said, don't let porpellr hit the hard ground ;)
Or you could fire that puppy up/rev it up & see if it'll fly off, just a few thoughts before my first full cup of coffee, oh yeh, do the 2nd one in a bathtub, you don't want propellr flying off somewhere.

You can order my video on do-it-yorself jet engine tricks for $29.95 online, order now & we've even thrown in a headache rack for the truck & a 2x4 to nail on bathtub wall, plus free shipping, plus there's more :o
I learnt a lot from working a day & half for Delta's engine dept :)

Then again, if yore in a big hurry, try that C clamp Glenn mentioned & you can order video afterwards.

Thanks Glenn, and Grumpy, I never thought of the clamp and rubber piece idea.  Grumpy, I though of your method about an hour into itbut, since it is off the boat I didn't think it would work to just hook the truck to the motor.

Well got it off, good thing I ordered a new key and sleeve they where pretty buggered up.  Have not torqued it back down but it looks like it will need 4 shims on top to close the gap.  All that is left it to replace the water pump impeller.  Thanks for your help Thumper (and Grumpy).
