Went back to the Elk this afternoon to see if Saturday was a fluke or for real.
The fishing started out slow for the first hour, then it took off, almost, but not quite, as good as it was on Saturday morning.
I used my favorite Elk set up the whole time that I fished: A tandem set-up; a weighted olive wooly bugger as the lead fly and a zebra soft hackle trailing about 15 nches behind.
I like this set-up, especially with the river running a little faster than usual; 470 cu. ft./sec.
Normally, I catch fish on the bugger while stripping across current and on the soft hackle on the swing. Today I caught ZERO fish on the bugger and a 'bunch' on the soft hackle. They hit it as soon as it hit the water, they hit it while stripping, they hit it on the swing, and they hit it after the swing while retrieving it straight towards me.
Needless to say, it was another fun day on the Elk. I am enjoying it as much as I usually do the Caney, except I haven't caught anything over 12".
The water temperature was 65 degrees today.
Rick,
You need to get yourself down,or is it up, to the Elk while the flow is perfect.
You said that you were new to flyfishing, so email me if I can be of any help. I will try. There are a lot of better flyfishers than me, but for some reason, no one is posting. Maybe no one else is fishing. I did have about 1/2 mile of river to myself this evening.
