I love me some New River
« on: March 24, 2009, 12:01:14 PM »
On our little getaway to Radford VA, Crystal and I didn't expect to catch much.  We knew we were early for the Smallmouth, and we kept our hopes high for another musky encounter as we threw large jerkbaits for whatever might bite.  The colder air blew in, and the bluebird skies made the conditions tough for catching anything.
We still had a blast.  There's something about this river I can't describe.  It's got so much good water and structure that it's mindboggling.  The best trait of all is that it has a very dense population of gamefish throughout it's flows.

After fishing all day Saturday without any luck, we decided to spend all day Sunday exploring and learning as much as possible for our return trips in the summer, fall, and winter.

Here's what we learned:

We learned all about the various floats, and found all launch sites and takeouts---especially important, we learned about the more treacherous rapid-filled stretches that we'll be rafting one of these days. ::)
We also found several great wade-in spots
We found some bankside access for camping and boat launching right beside some of the prime spots for Winter muskie fishing--and we heard plenty of locals tell us stories about their encounters and catches with those large toothy fish...
We found good mom and pop restaurants with some good country cooking.
We also found shoals where the walleye and striper/hybrids run out of Claytor Lake--it was still too early.

Looks like a good time on the water!

I like what you have done with the boat. Very cool!  8)

Early spring,,,,, it isn't bitching.

Still,, exploratory trips are always a hoot when you don't have much expectations and just lay back and enjoy the location. Sometimes we forget to do this when the fish are biting.

It'll pick up here in another 30 days or so.

I take it you were downstream "up" in VA from the confluence of the Little New River. You ever get a chance to make it to the N.C. side around Piney Creek? Sometimes the tribs can be better fishing for smallies once the temps rise a little.

Good stuff there man. A great way to spend a Spring weekend.

I have a blast exploring new water, especially when it's in another state.  Everything is fresh and new.   Good stuff, Travis!

It is a cool place isnt it?  Not too far off the interstate, but just far enough.  I took my Supreme out on it one day in the lake section while on my way to New Hampshire a few summers ago.  It was August, very hot and I had minimal success in the morning so I just went cruising around kinda like yall did.  I was impressed with the area and would like to go back one of these days and see if I can be impressed by the fishing.  Did yall go poking around on  that long dirt road that runs alongside (kinda) the river?  Really neat area, but I saw some scaries back up in there!

We accessed every mile of riverside backroad that we could find.  A lot of it is private, but several access points and ramps open up some great floating opportunities.  Not to mention that Tangent Outfitters in Pembroke offers a reliable, safe shuttle service.

If you fish there in early fall...You might just want to stay there for good...and become one of the Scaries  ;)
