Opinions please
« on: December 26, 2009, 08:26:30 PM »
Ok so I bought the 1452 polarkraft all welded jon boat with 25/20 jet.  I have done all I can do to get everything out of the motor and it's just not enough power for the boat.  It is a heavy boat built like a tank.  After looking at outboardjets.com that motor max weight should be 800lbs.  With me in it it will get on plane but just barley.  So do I Look for a 40/30 jet or was thinking about picking up a 16' riverhawk or geenoe.  Anyone know what a 2000 25/20 2 stroke Johnson outboard is worth?

40/30 Yamaha is the answer to all your problems. I don't think a gheenoe or riverhawk will cure any of your troubles!  ;)
I just don't care!

If I were you I would stay away from riverhook.  I will not share my experience on this board, but if you care to know why I will PM you the story.  I repeat do not buy RIVERHAWK!!!!!

Lawnman before you buy a Gheenoe or Riverhawk I would suggest you hitch a ride in either one.  I owned a fished from a Gheenoe for a season or more.  I found it to be a little small to fish two adults from while standing.  I rigged it with a 2005 Mercury 2 stroke prop o/b which I was not happy with for the Caney Fork at low water levels.  I converted the Mercury to a jet and ran it on the Gheenoe as well.  It worked ok.  The narrow transom width and lack of a wide bottom really proved to me that a Gheenoe or Riverhawk is not suited for a jet o/b.

I would look at selling your Jonhson jet, if you're happy with you hull, and buy a Yamaha 40/30 4 stroke o/b jet.  I would get one with electric start.  Having owned one of these motors and regretting ever selling my jet sled I will someday have another one.  Also the Yamaha 40/30 4 stroke sips fuel compared to my Mercury 25/20 2 stroke jet

On the used market I would expect to get $1700 to $2300 for your Johnson jet o/b.

Another ideal might be to buy a light hull more suited for your current jet.

Good Luck,
Glenn

You don't want a Rivhawk or GHNOE with those kids aboard, get the motor.

Gheenoe style boats are great for what they are designed for, a small prop motor and expect to keep them light enough to pull over gravel bars. They are NOT a jet hull. I know from experience ;D I had the widest transom they offer and it was not enough width.

Just exploring all the possibilities.  I found a 16/48 landau with a yamaha 40/30 two stoke on it in Missouri.  Good price on it and the pics look good.  I like the current hull I have but could always stand to be be bigger.  What do you guys think about a converted 40 two stroke yamaha?  The guy only wants 2500 for the rig and I could use a road trip.

Yamaha makes the best engine in the market IMO.  I spoke with a guy that never cleans the salt out of his engines and he said the Mercs crap out in 3-4 years and he has not had a lick of trouble out of the Yamaha.  Get with Thumper on the conversion. He is good at the kind of thing.

ps-  Im glad you sold your boat ;D ;D ;D

I love Yamahas and I think the two stroke is a better choice for small ob jet than the four.  I would check the motor very carefully on this deal.  It looks way under-priced even in this slow boat market.

What you give up in speed you get in savings.  I have a four stroke and I can run forever on 3 gallons of gas.  However, if you have it pull it off a gravel bar the extra hundred pounds in a four is a big deal.

Well went with the Merc 25 fourstroke.  Have not taken it out yet but looks pretty sweet.  I would highly recommend Lawrenceburg Marine, David Darnell recommended them to me and they where great.  They are very knowledgeable about jets and have a great selection and prices on motors and boats.
