I'm loving it.
« on: February 09, 2010, 11:08:45 AM »
The new Canon is SWEET. I also bought a Mac so I'm still working on getting around that thing and haven't really learned all the ins and outs of Aperture yet. I'll post some stuff from the 50D soon.
One thing I think worth mentioning is to start early with a file system to keep you images in. Mine were all over the place and it's been a nightmare to get them all in one spot. I finally got the Mac to play nice with PC last night and copy 73 gig of images! :o

Anyway in case anyone was wondering this is one of the main reasons I left Sony. http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/85mm.htm
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-85mm-f-1.8-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

One hell of a good low light lens that can be had for under $400 and this only one of many in the Canon lens line.

those shots by rockwell with that 85 look pretty good, seems like it has some CA in them though, especially in the first two of the Gazebo and in the crops of the tree in the last set, still yet, an 85mm at that price!!!

If you look across the range of lenses from Canon, they have a lot of good looking lenses that seem moderatly cheaper than their counterparts.

It's a pro quality lens with a reputation for being as good or better then the 85mm L lens for under $400. That's freaking awesome no matter how you dice it.

Canon 85mm 1.8  List $701  Amazon - $378

Nikon 85mm 1.8D  List $565  Amazon $450

Both great lenses - sharp (among the best in their lines - 85's are easy to design and build), relatively fast, optically correct, lightweight - etc...

What you trade out in the two is that the Canon has the USM AF technology while the Nikon does not have the AF-S technology.  But really not a discernable difference between the two.  Besides these lenses are portrait lenses - too short or too long for field work generally.  Being portrait lenses they will generally be stuck on a tripod (or should be) - AF is suspect in that instance - you gotta be careful on what part of the face that thing is focusing on!

The Nikon has the D chip in it.  This means that the lens is capable of sending more information about distance, etc... to an appropriately equipped TTL camera to be used in better flash control.

Oh yea, and the Canon is f22 while the Nikon is f16.

My question would be - Why the bigger discount for the Canon?  Maybe nobody wants them and they have to sell them cheaper!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

At F1.8 and a sensor that isn't noisy I could hand hold this lens in a moderately lit room and get good res and sharp results. Tripod, I don’t need no stinkin tripod.

BTW Mike check Craigslist, some guy is selling alot of nice Canon gear at a good price in Dickson.

Nice try, but way too much money tied up in the Nikons and Nikon mounts!   If'n I was going to spend more, It would be the D3x - now talk about noiseless and at awesome ISO's (19800 without much discernible noise)   - don't need no stinking tripod nor don't need a stinking flash!  But then again - I don't have $7500 to spend on a new camera body!
