I don’t know if you use your boat as much as I use mine but if you do then you want to be sure you do a tune up every spring. Here’s a list I perform on mine that ensures it will perform when I need it the most.
New plugs every year. This makes a huge difference in the way my Evinrude 25 hp runs and starts!
New lower unit oil every year. If the oils shows sign of water in it, have the seals replaced.
New gas filter every year. In my Center console boat I use a water fuel separator. This is a small price to pay considering what it is protecting. It won’t allow any debris or water from the gas tank to enter the fuel system. Many outboards have died due to fuel related problems that could have been prevented with a filter/separator. If you have an older boat (fuel tank), then you defiantly want to consider buying one of these.
New Water pump every two years. I knew this and thought I could get by another year or two…. Wrong, the pump failed ten min into a planned three day trip in another state.
Rebuild prop as needed.
Inspect hoses and wires every time you have the hood off the motor. Look around for parts that might have vibrated off.
If you plan to not run the motor for awhile then run it completely out of gas before putting it up. I’ll do this at the ramp if nobody is waiting.
You should always avoid running your motor at high RPM’s on the trailer while in gear at the ramp. Doing this is illegal in alot of places in Florida because it causes damage to the ramp. It also causes damage to your $$$$ prop.
Always test your batteries and electrical connections and run your outboard on the hose prior to launching it if it has been sitting for a long time. It is disrespectful to work on your boat at the ramp while others are waiting to use it.
Just a few tips to help keep you enjoying your time on the water.
