Offshore trip....
« on: March 05, 2010, 02:29:08 PM »

Spent last weekend offshore in the Gulf of Mexico - waaaayyyyy offshore - about 125 miles or so.  :D  Left Saturday night - got back to the marina about 3 on Monday.  We were primarily hunting yellowfin and fishing was off - perhaps due to the water being colder than usual. Still caught a few YFT in the 20-30 lb range, a bunch of blackfin tuna - dang are those little buggers tough fighters and some amberjack.  Fishing could have been better but the company was good and it was a good time nonetheless.  Here are a few shots from the trip....

The boat....

Where we started the day Sunday AM...

Typical of the YFT caught...

Fresh tuna steaks anyone?

Sunset Sunday....

Where we set up for fishing Sunday night....it's amazing to me how many of these rigs there are out there and just how dang big some of them are...

An amberjack I caught - if you've never caught one of these "reef donkies" you really owe it to yourself at least once - it's just unbelievable how hard they pull - there were times with this one where it simply was not possible to actually turn the reel handle and all I could do was  hold on and use the waves to help me gain line back - and this one wasn't even really a BIG one... perhaps 50 lbs or so.  ;D

Nice Tim! Thanks for sharing the shots. Now I am jealous. I bet that fresh tuna is awesome.

Tim did you guys enjoy that Tuna while it was fresh? Also is AJ pretty tasty? That's one fish I've not ever caught or eaten. Glad you got to get an early start on some drag peeling. Nice pics too.

Yes we did Mike - we had some on the grill on the boat within a very few hours of catching it.

I'd describe the AJ as being similar to grouper but firmer and and a little stronger tasting...it's fairly popular for the table. It's not a real fatty or oily meat like some saltwater fish can be. Personally I lean to a more flaky, milder tasting fish but it's pretty good.

Some more of that YFT is going to get in my belly tomorrow!

We  fished lots of different ways Travis....trolled rigged ballyhoo, live baits down deep as well as under a kite, chunking, butterfly jigging, even on slugo type baits under popping corks and big topwater lures. Probably the coolest technique I saw...tho we didn't actually catch anything on it....was when the mates put up a kite with the line to a plastic flying fish lure in the clip but they held the lure on the stern until the kite got pretty far out and then they'd put the reel in gear, get some tension on the line and then let the lure go - it would literally launch off the stern and shoot across the waves  looking for all the world like the real thing! Pretty darn cool.   ;D Most of the YFT came on trolled baits while the blackfin were mostly on the butterfly jigs and the AJs were on live baits.

Nothing better than fresh yellowfin steaks. Used to catch them all the time off of San Diego. Looks like you had a great trip. I need to get myself down there for some of that fishing.
