Tomorrow's Plan Tellico/HI
« on: March 16, 2010, 05:10:27 PM »
Going to ride up to Tellico and fish the river in the morning, since the Hiwassee will be on two generators until 2pm. Taking my father in law and it would be impossible for him to get in the HI. Is the Tellico fishing good right now? I saw they stocked on the 14th.

I have no idea how it is fishing but I suspect it'll still be a little cold. Be sure to give us a report.

Water was really cold and quite today. Didn't see hardly any fish. Caught one fish and boy was it ever a surprise. :o

In my experience, Tellico was always a beautiful, but sometimes frustrating stream.  Even during ideal conditions, there weren't always the best of hatches.  Every now and then, you'd find some early morning bugs, an occaisional drake fluttering by, but never any WOW hatches like Beaverdam or Laurel Fork.

I found the river fished best without an indicator, plenty of shot on the line, and picking apart pocket water with #12 Hare's Ears , the cliche Tellico Nymph.

The deep roadside pools often were loaded with larger stockers.  A tiny stripped smaller bugger sunk deep would lure up the fish.
When you do catch em, there  are some truly Large 20+ inchers there, but it can be a lot of work.
My favorite stretch is the TeaStained Holly Flats section of the Bald River---brushy and hard to wade, but you'll find some nice browns in that water.

A couple of my friends were up there the first of this week, ran into 6' of snow, said the fishing was tuff, i bet it was beautiful though.
I'll be up that way in 3 1/2 weeks for a 3 day weekend, weather allowing it :D
