Where is the shortest drive from Nashville to salt?
« on: March 10, 2010, 02:15:44 PM »
First off, I am in no way going any where for a while with a new girl coming in May. But, I was wondering if you guys who do go could help me figure out the closest to Nashville. Any types of fishing will work as long as it is salt species. Just throw me out some suggestions if I was to take a long weekend sometime in the future. I have only been to the ocean twice in my 30 years so I have no clue.

Travis,

Personally, I just recently made a long weekend trip to the salt.  I made the run to the Destin, FL area.  Which has got to be the shortest trip since it's nearly a straight shot south.  It was an easy 7hr drive (though you could probably make it sooner if you had to and were a little heavier on the gas then I was).  It was my first trip to that area, but it won't be my last.

Redfish are available year-round.  Jacks are available off of the beach in spring along with sea trout in the bays.  Tarpon in the summer months.  Off-shore is also not that far off-shore in the summer - sails and mahi mahi.

They just recently expanded the Panama City, FL airport.  Southwest will start running a couple of direct flights daily starting in May (1:15min - 1:30min), if flying is another option.  Though once you start flying that opens up a whole lot more of the coast.

Destin or Pensicola probably. If you go to Pensicola and want to hire a guide for inshore stuff, mainly redfish. Hunter Armour is excellent. He lives right on Perdido Key and you leave right from his house. We caught a bunch of reds in the high teens while fishing with him.

good fishing,
Brian

Destin is the closest. It's 5 1/2 hours from Huntsville. ;D

I saw on the news last week that Huntsville airport was going to start offering 99 $ one way trips to orlando I hope that little tidbit helps
The more I fish the more I realize it isn t about the fishing.  The older I get the more I realize it is about the moments God has hand crafted just for me.

You can get to the Gulf Coast in about 8 hours, but it might be a little oily by the time you get there.   :-\
