Cigar hydration
« on: June 17, 2010, 03:12:34 PM »
My better half gave me a "half box" of cigars last weekend.  Opened one up with the intent of smoking it as I waded a little creek a couple of days ago. Since I was traveling light that day I clipped the end before I left the house and stuck it in my shirt pocket. Murphy continued his reign of terror that has plagued my fishing exploits this year and I wound up not fishing or smoking that cigar.  When I took it out of my pocket later to put it away I found the wrapper was flaking off and coming apart much as I've seen cigars do in the past when they are dried out.    What I'm wondering is if this in fact is a matter of moisture content in the wrapper and if there is a practical way to rehydrate them if that's what caused this problem?  The sticks came to me in individual glass tubes inside a box with small foam caps inside the tubes.  Did we just get a box of stale sticks?  Try another one to see if it was just that stick before doing anything? Take them all out of their tubes and put them in the humidor? Put a few drops of fluid on the little foam caps inside the glass tubes?  None of the above?   ;)

Thanks for any insight on this.

Tim

None of the above. The best and only to hydrate is storage in a humi over time and gradually bring the moisture content back up.

Likely the culprit of the flaking is bouncing around in your pocket.

Thanks Steve.

You may be right about why the wrapper was flaking off though I've certainly had sticks in my shirt pocket for longer without that happening. Maybe I was just lucky those times!

BandDad, The cigars are no good. The expiration date has obviously past. Just leave them in the tube and let me know when you are available. I will stop by and properly dispose of them for you.

It is not a problem and I would be glad to help you out in this time of need.
