Anyone been up to the Wolf Creek Cumberland lately?
« on: July 01, 2010, 02:04:19 PM »
Hey guys -

I'm just trying to get updated on the situation below Wolf Creek Dam on the Cumberland.  I have a buddy who's living in Cincinnati and I've agreed to meet him halfway (which just about puts us on the Cumberland exactly) come fall.

The long range forecasts were for us to have a relatively wet spring and dry summer.  So far that's half right; Spring wasn't all that wet, but we're definitely having a dry summer.  With the dam situation on the Cumberland, not having too much water is probably a good thing, but they don't need to be dead low all August either.

So I'd appreciate an update.  I miss fishing East Tennessee.  Down here in Atlanta, we don't have it nearly so good.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

Not sure how it's been where you're at, but spring was plenty wet up here.  Summer precip has been above average so far as well.

fish counts on slot browns are way way down; good sized  rainbows are way down too but not nearly as much as the browns.  Overall the "glory years" are but a memory.  I do nto know anyone who has fished it this year that was not pretty discouraged by the experience  when compared to last ten years prior to 2008.

That's depressing.  I will probably still meet my buddy there because it is so convenient, but I'll warn him the river will not be what it once was.  I appreciate having had the chance to fish it when it was still good, and I hope it will get that way again.

Does anyone know what happened to the bigger browns?  Were they being stunned by the heat and washed downriver, never to be seen, or were people killing them with an eye to "getting while the gettin's good?"

Thanks for the update.
