Big South Fork Questions

Looks like I will get to go backpacking to the Big South Fork area this coming weekend.
Does anyone have any recomendations or advice that might be helpful for the fishing or sites to see?

The whole gorge is spectacular. You might consider taking a slightly heavier rig along and some large streamers or big hair bugs/mice; there's some very large muskies in the deeper pools (even upstream out of the wild-n-scenic reach), and you might be surprised to pick up some better than average smallmouth on those same flies. Find large downed trees in water deeper than 4' and it's very likely there's a muskie home, or at least nearby. Be ready to try to trigger following fish.

oh, and if you plan on swimming you might want to bring a mask and snorkel. Some really neat fish in the system (ashy darters! bloodfin darters!), and many will still have pretty decent color. Fun way to pass the time during mid-afternoons when bigger fish are laying low.

Where will you be?

We do the float from Angel Falls to Blue Heron. It is really nice scenery but once you get in the gorge it is down right beautiful. The part we do is 19 miles with nothing but random logging roads around you. Peace and quiet at night.

Fishing is pretty good on olive colors and rusty craw colors. Stick with crayfish imitations and you will bend your rod.

Also if you are backpacking...carry bear spray and hang your food at night. Boars are up there as well.

Almost forgot, if you go from TN up into KY as long as you are in the main part of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland it follows a reciprocal agreement. But if you plan to fish some tributaries up in the KY side which is where the trout are you need the KY licenses that apply.

Just depends on where you are going to be at.

We will start our trip by stopping by the Clear Fork and then heading up to the Twin Arches area.
This trip will take place in the Tennessee section.
