Best 5wt. line for Caney, etc.
« on: January 08, 2007, 09:42:00 AM »
Hey guys,

I'm needing a new 5wt. line and curious if you guys are using WF or DT lines.  This would be for a 9' 5wt. rod throwing mostly nymphs and wooly buggers in the Caney and other area rivers.

Any input would be appreciated, thanks

Todd

For a 5wt I like a WF line and for a 1-3 I like a DT line. I like the Orvis lines alright and the SA lines are hard to beat as well. I feel like the line is maybe the most important piece of equipment so spend as much money as you can on a good line.

Thanks Mike, I feel the same way.  I have a DT on my 4wt. but I think I'm going to stick with a WF for my 5wt.  I am leaning toward the new Orvis Wonderline 3, which I have heard some great things about, but I'm a little nervous since I'm a long time Cortland and SA user...

Ask Leo about the new Cortland Drifter, it was made for throwing nymphs & he has no problems doing it.

I have several lines, probably in the 22 or 23 range.  I have mostly used one of two different lines for the past 2 to 3 years, either the Sylk or the Wulf Triangle taper and only in the WF or WF Rocket taper in the 5 wt lines.  That is until I tried the Drifter series Dyna tip from Cortland.  this has to be one of the best lines I have fished for several reasons.  It floats nice and high which makes for easy pick up, mending, and far more hook ups than with the others. I don't usually do a lot of false casting and what this line has done is made it much easier for me to pick up the line off the water, and put it back on a rise or back in the water for another drift very very easily.  Any one that wants to try it sometime on the water when I am up there just let me know, it will sell itself to you as a great nymphing line.

Thanks Leo - great info.  I have always liked Cortland lines, so I may have to look into that series.  I haven't strayed far from the 444...
