Braided Line
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:01:24 PM »
Did not really know where to put this question.

I have a duffel bag full of braided line spools different manufactures with leftovers from spooling my conventional reels over the years.

Is there any use for this line in fly fishing?  I wouldn't think so being no stretch and non-floating but you guys on here are pretty creative.

Braid makes great backing; lighter weights also make great thread for big hair bugs as long as you apply even pressure -- as with Kevlar, they have a tendency to cut hair when cinched down really hard unless you throw a couple wraps on to buffer itself...

well if you go after muskie I have used it as a leader.   It is hard for the toothy guys to cut through it.  Landed a couple musky and a northern on the same braided leader last summer.

Use it to make some furled leaders.

That looks really interesting and I am gonna give it a try.

What line size would you start with for say nymphing or throwing streamers. His version seemed too big.

I did a few with some 6 pound fire wire. Wally world has some 6# power pro on sale. That stuff floats great.

Cool, thanks Mike.

Was his length about right or did you find shorter/longer better?

I am fixing to make a trial one now.

His length was just for the vid. I'd make it at least 6 or 7' long. From there you add tippet to make it 9' or longer.

Hey Mike, how tight you wrap it when twisting them together. I have a hard time getting the wraps tight together. How do you keep the tag ends from twisting all up while wrapping. My only real successful one so far was with using a drill real slow but it twised it all up once I finished.

Working with it though, they definitely look like they'll work and save a few buck will all the scrap line I have on leaders.

After seeing the video I made up a few leaders of my own with stuff I had laying around.   The mono leaders turned out really well but i had the same problems on my braided (actually spiderwire).  I couldnt get it to hold a twist at all and it was just a mess.  I'm thinking that it would make better backing.

The only mono I had laying around was some 8 lb so thats what I used.  It was more of an experiment to see how it would turn out than anything.  I'll probably make some up with some smaller stuff maybe 4-6lb for a trout leader and use these for something larger.

Anyhow, there really isnt a need to keep it tight at all.  Just twisting with your fingers is sufficient.  The 'tag' ends just need to be free flowing for the most part.  As he said in the video, just keep the two ends separated otherwise they'll twist eachother up into a big ole mess.  When I was working with the longer pieces I formed like a triangle.  the completed leader going straight out from me, and each of the tag ends for lack of a better term on each side of me.  Its a good idea to take your time and keep everything from twisting up.  The twist you impart on the completed leader is all you want twisted, and then keep the leader itself from twisting up.  Every couple inches (4-6 or so) I'd kind of play with the 3 ends and keep them straight if possible.  If I didnt, it got messy and caused me a lot of work.

I also suggest trying it out with a short 1-2 foot piece just to get a feel for it before you tackle a 20 foot length.  The longer the amount of mono you have the more troublesome it becomes to keep things from getting out of control.

I found a way that worked using an adaptation of the link above and this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tnhdLh3Df4  It is not in English but you get the idea.

I used a 20ft piece of line and done as this video shows, then once drill is done twisting, doubled it over onto the hook so both loops are on same hook, I did as the previous link demonstrated by hand and cut the loops off. It twists really easy and tight. About 3/4 the way it will start to not twist as well, then you remove from the hook and finish by hand like previous link as does as well.

I have a 6ft piece of tightly furled mono that was a 20ft piece of 10# small diameter brown line to begin with and it is limp as wet noodle.

Looks good and it should float like a cork.
