Sewage spills into Tennessee
River

August 10, 2010

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- State officials are
preparing a violation notice after more than
100,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the
Tennessee River at Chattanooga.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported the spill
killed an estimated 3,600 fish and forced people
living on boats at Browns Ferry Marina to leave their
homes.

The spill on Thursday and Friday came after a
lightning strike knocked out power to the Moccasin
Bend Sewage Treatment Plant.

Plant manager Jerry Stewart said workers were busy
restoring service at the main plant and they didn't
notice that power to the Tiftonia pump station had
also been knocked out.

Dr. Richard Urban of the Tennessee Department of
Environment and Conservation said the department
will issue a notice of violation.

Oooopsy, did we do that??

If that notice of violation included fines of a million plus dollars it'd teach them a lesson. Of course that lesson would be how to pass that cost on to consumers...

That's right smack in the middle of Richard Simms' fishing grounds.  I'm sure he's got plenty of backup areas but that's got to be a heart breaker to lose a good fishing hole because the sewage treatment plant couldn't be bothered to have a backup power system.
