The Hooch of ATL
« on: December 12, 2010, 07:56:37 PM »

I was in Atlanta on business this past weekend and managed to fish the Hooch on Saturday. This was my 1st time fishing for trout beyond my home territory of middle TN. All I can say is that the Hooch revealed to me that I still have a lot to learn about trout and the flyrod. Being out of my element taught me a lot. Besides the fact that it was pretty windy and I only managed to land one 12" bow over a 3 hour period, I had a freakin blast ;D! I did watch a guy 50 yards up river from me land at least 30 or so 12"+ bows :-\. It was obvious that I wasn't throwing the bug of choice.

The fishermen of the greater Atlanta area have a jewel right in their backyards. I was on the river within 20 minutes of leaving my near downtown hotel room. Not to mention, my 1-year out of state fishing license+trout stamp cost me only $67. If any of you are ever down there, check it out. Make sure you stop by The FishHawk and see Gary, Bob or any of the other guys at the shop.

I have an uncle who lives in Atlanta and guides on a game farm down there.  He and I hunt wild pheasants out in Kansas, and his dogs are some of the best-trained bird dogs I have ever seen in my life.  They get to stay sharp in the off season hunting with him on the preserve, so they're like super dogs when opening day of pheasant season rolls around.

Anyway, I've been wanting for a few years to go down to Atlanta on a weekend and spend a day with him hunting quail or pheasants on the preserve, and then another day trout fishing on the Hooch.  I really need to get off my butt and do that.
