Merc or Yamaha 4 strokes
« on: December 06, 2010, 02:10:37 PM »
Going to be buying a new motor for my v-hull fishing boat this next coming year. It will probably be either a 9.9 or 15hp. for weight considerations on a 14ft alum boat.   I have several Merc dealers close and a couple of Yamaha dealers about an hr away. I've always had 2 strokes in the past and I've looked at a new yamaha 9.9 2-stroke with 100:1 oil mix.
In your opinion, who do you think makes the best small portable 4 stroke
and why?  Nissan and Tohatsu are out of the running as the dealers are too far away when I need service. This will be a short shaft with manual start.

Talked to some folks on the white who rent boats with those 15hp outboards. They said the yamaha's were a better tougher motor. They had both.

I'd say they are all good, comes down to what bells and whistles you desire and if you have brand loyalty.

The place my FFF clubs stays twice a year for 8 days each time, he has 9.9 2 stroke Mercurys, has great service out of them, and that is with lots of non boat persons using them, we have some in our club ;) never saw one not crank on the first pull, and them two bangers will push a 20' Arkansas fiberglass Jon authority and that includes 3 adults in boat.

A lot of wisdom in that statement.

In a small boat the 2 things I look for is displacement and weight.  Since you have stated that your concerned about weight, why not an ordinary 2-stroke. As they are lighter and usually have more displacement that 4-strokes in that size range.

We (dad, brother, and I) never really have had to do any maintenance on our three small kicker motors, except cleaning the carbs due to ethanol, making sure fluids are full, change plugs once a year, and making sure that water is drain (full extent of our "winterizing).

Dad's 8 hp 4-stroke Johnson (made by Suzuki, a brand you left off your list) has been fantastic for use as a kicker motor for trolling, he often moves it boat to boat and runs it 300 or so hours a year.  My brother's Mercury 4-stroke (5-hp), which he sold with his Lund, worked pretty good too.  My 5 hp Honda, I believe will work well, once we get everything cleaned out from previous owner's ethanol use. Parts are expensive on the Honda, just the fittings for the gas tank line have been a pain (2 different Honda versions).  Ours are all used for trolling so noise and fuel economy were consideration for the 4-strokes.

For thrust to run up river, I would be looking at 2-strokes.  As your only running them for awhile.  Also 2-strokes supposedly are easier to work on, especially for backyard type mechanics.   As I said early never really had much maintenance but it is reported that 4-strokes cost more than 2-strokes in up keep.

I would still be interested in a 2 stroke but I don't think any of the companies are producing them anymore. I talked with Madisonville marine today and they have a new 9.9 yamaha 2 stroke left over from 2008. Looking at all the sites, yama, merc, nissan..etc. no one shows new 2 strokes.

I've looked at a couple of used motors so far but for $1000 dollars more, I can buy new with 2-3 year warranty and I'll be honest, I have not have good luck buying used boats and motors in the past....even from dealers.

Plenty of good used 2-strokes out there. If you're stuck on new, your right not really any 2-strokes till you get to about 25 hp (about 60 lbs heavier than 4-stroke 15 hp).

this has already been said, but your best bang for your buck from a power to weight ratio will be 2 stroke.  If you are trying to stick with 9.9 or 15HP 4 stroke due to weight, you might be able to step up to a 25HP 2 stroke.

Merc, Tohatsu and Nissan are all the same 4 strokes...all made by Tohatsu up to 20 or 25HP I believe.  The main difference is dealer network and Merc Tiller has the "all in one" handle.

Doubt you could go wrong buying a new Merc or Yamaha...both are solid motors with strong dealer network and reliability reputation.

I own a 20HP Nissan 4 stroke...I thought that I "needed" to buy a new motor.  I am happy with my motor, it has been relatively trouble free with very little maintenance in the last 3 years, but I sometimes wish I would have gone the Merc 2 Stroke route.  Could have added 5 more horsies and had less waight on the transom...

This is the equivalent of the age old "which 5wt is the best" question.

Found a dealer that has several used 2 strokes in stock and he said basically the same as you all have. I'll be taking a trip soon to check them out.  I've got a couple of months to look for a deal  before buying. Hopefully the winter boat shows will encourage people to upgrade and I'll find what I need at a decent price. Bfish, you know from my recent picts on LRO which boat this will be going on.

I went from a Yamaha to a Mercury recenty. The price diffference is nearly 1000 dollars higher on a yamaha. MErcury comes in a grand cheaper and comes with a full 5 year warrenty on new motors. I looked, shopped, and have run lots of motors and there is not a whole lot of difference when your on the river. I ran a 15 4 stroke yamaha for many years and the performance difference is not worth the cost difference. Plus I deal with the same marine center for all my needs and they are a Mercury dealer, provide high levels of service and to be honest I like them.
