FL Fishing Question

I am headed to Cape San Blas, FL in mid-April for a vacation with my wife and wanted to try and fish while we are there. Does anyone of a good guide in the area or have any contacts nearby?

Hey Steve, you will need to stop in here http://www.scallopcove.com/ most everyday for ice cream and t-shirts. Also, they have a bait store there that rents kayaks etc. You can access St Joe Bay via kayak or canoe just down from Scallop Cove. Good red fishing and trout. Also have caught (sportsman released) a big spinner shark close to the canoe access one year.

There used to be a fly fishing guide named Trey who ran a flats boat out of here, http://www.indianpasscamp.com/index.html but not sure if he is still around or not.

Some of the best guides in the area are Robinson Bros and they fish the Apalachacola Bay and the backwaters  http://www.flaredfish.com but they are over in Apalach, about 30 minutes away or 20 minutes if I am driving. 

And, don't miss the chance to stop by http://www.indianpassrawbar.com/ the best oysters around.

David, that is excellent information to get me started. I will do some research and I may ping you for some additional information.

I knew about the raw bar from someone here at the office and I can't wait to get there and have a few dozen oysters.

Not sure how I missed this one Steve - but anyway - if you're interested in more of an "offshore" type trip I (with my father and son) fished with a guy by the name of Chip Blackburn. He was easy to spend time with, put us on some fish and didn't have any issue with the fact that I brought along some of my lighter spinning gear to play with the kingfish on.  I'd go with him again if I was in the area looking for that kind of trip. The cobia fishing should be in full swing about that time if I'm remembering correctly. FUN to catch and just as good to eat fwiw.

Oh - and I forgot to mention Steve that if you choose to go the route of taking/renting a yak or another boat to fish on your own I can point you to a few spots as I've taken a boat down to Cape San Blas and the Appalachicola area to fish on my own a few times. Just let me know if you're interested in the info.

Bring a 7 and 9.  You have to remember the wind and the salt.  It's not always the size of fish, but the elements around you, be it the weather or the mangroves.  Tie plenty of clousers/deceivers,  baitfish imitations that time of year is what they are focused on if it is warm, not hot, just warm. Furthermore, you want to fish moving water and you need to watch the tides.  If the water is stagnant the only thing biting will be the lady's, fun to catch, but not really why a fisherman like you would go to the salt for.  Bring sinking line for the passes and floating for everything else.  Beach fishing is great and maybe you can get lucky and get the bonita crashing the shore or jacks running the beach.  Talk with jim at Fly South, he knows that area well and has given me some great patterns over the years
