First Timer on the Elk - Kayak put in / take out
« on: January 22, 2011, 09:47:17 PM »
Hi all,

My dad and I are going to hit the Elk for the first time.  We usually fish the Caney, but wanted to explore some other rivers.

We will be floating / wading using kayaks.

Can anyone help me out with some put in take out spots.  We have two vehicles, so we can drop off one at a take out spot.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Josh

Great maps on that post, thanks for the link.

Does anyone know about how long a float is from the dam to Farris Creek Bridge?

it is about 9  miles from dam to Farris ,it is a great day float!! Farris to Old Dam Ford is also a good day float for shorter days of winter.

How is the wading after the first mile downstrem from Farris when floating to the Old Dam Ford?

There is a lot of wadeable water between farris and old dam, also long stretches of slow deep water. i usually fly fish the wadeable water and cast a spinrod with a rapala as i float through the slow deep stuff. I have caught more Big Browns below farris than above.

Yoda,
Thanks for the good info-especially the deep water info. I would have been left high and dry if you had not told me about the spin fishing. I had never given it any thought:)

What colors / sizes on the rapalas.  We are going to be fly fishing while wading and throwing jerkbaits / rooster tails while floating.

I have had best luck with Gold,  2" original floating, slow, dive and pause retrieve, fish usually hit on the pause.

Original F-5 Rapala has always been one of my favorite trout lures too. I have caught rainbows up to 6lbs on them. Gold, fire tiger, perch, rainbow trout, gold/orange back and plain old silver are my favorites.

If you guys ever need another kayaker to fish the Elk, let me know. I can pick up and drop off up to 3-4 Kayaks with my truck. The one time I tried to make it down to the Elk this last year, by truck broke the serpentine belt. Maybe it was an omen, but I still have to get down there and fish those browns and bows.

Looks like you guys have covered it. Then only thing i could add would be to stress the pause. Every decent  I have ever caught has  seemed to hit on the pause. Also, Throw to cover. If you dont catch at least 5 trees, you aren't throwing tight enough! Sometimes I catch 10+trees and myself....but that's because of my skills.

Yeah I am done with catching myself.  Last time at the Caney I got a Rapala stuck so deep in my leg, I had to go to Cookville urgent care to get it cut out.
