Plateau report 4-23-11
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:42:51 AM »
Trout were tough to find on the Plateau. Cane Creek was higher than I like to fish still running milky and swift. Saw huge hatch of gray mayflies and a smaller hatch of black mayflies with clear wings. High water over the last couple of Springs has created more deep holding water. Last stocking date is May 20 and the water should be optimal over the next couple of weeks even with rain showers. TWRA was out checking licenses and that is always good to see.
Calf-killer is running clear and high.
Caney slack water pool is clear and green.
Area ponds and lakes good for bluegill with poppers and shellcraker with # 10 Mcginty wets.

Nice Brady!  My son has been on me about taking him back out that way again.  I'm wanting to hit the Calfkiller for smallmouth sometime before it starts getting really hot out.  I have a line on a decent canoe I am trying to purchase...  Hope to see you soon!

I've had the best luck on the Calfkiller from the end of May until about the 4th of July.
I'll keep you both posted. See you around.

The plateau creeks have not been good to me this year when I've made it up there.  Not sure why.  There are a couple streams in southern Kentucky that are within reach, and they have been fishing pretty well.  Kentucky may have the only trout water within driving distance that's worth being on right now.

Seems like the Plateau creeks are seeing a dramatic decrease in stocking over the past couple of years. In the past, the creeks would be stocked twice a month from March-May with 10,000 trout. Now they are only stocked once a month with 5,000 trout.
My other contacts in Van Buren county are saying that trout fishing has been off as well for the past couple of years.
I would have thought that the wet springs, higher water and lack of fishing pressure would have created a better hold over fishery by now. Maybe the high water levels have pushed the trout out or TWRA is just stocking even fewer fish. I can only imagine what will happen to these resources once/if the proposed hatchery cuts take effect.
