Tippet Dispenser System
« on: March 21, 2011, 11:22:19 AM »
I love the Maxima Ultragreen tippet and their spools, which are a larger diameter than most spools, but easier for me to handle.  Problem is, they come from the factory with nothing but a rubber band holding the tippet to the spool, and it does not do a good job of managing the tippet out on the river.

Can anyone recommend a tippet dispenser they like?  I either need to find bands that are large enough to fit these Maxima spools and have the eyes and the cutters on them, or a tippet system I can load the Maxima material into that will manage it in a clean in neat fashion.

Something like this - anyone used it?

Thx,

I took a couple swivel clips, a nylon shoe string, shrink tubing, couple keepers and made me one to fit on my "necklace"

The swivels don't show up good in photo, the kind you use bait fishing. I can get you other photos if interested.

David, are those blue bands on the tippet spools 'aftermarket", or do they come with that particular brand of tippet?

Ok, so those are the Loon Sharktooth bands?  Do you like them, are they working well?  Thanks,

My first concern with the sharkskins is that they cost $8 each. :o
I wouldn't mind paying it if I knew for sure that they wont eventually stretch and fall off the spool like the rio tippet bands do over time.

I buy the cheapest Rio I can find with the bands Just to get the bands and spools. From there I spool Seaguar Flour in 2,4,6,8,10, pound test onto the Rio spools and bands. I did it at first as a cost savings but I've grown to like the Seaguar better then "tippet" so I use it exclusively now. I've tested it for several years and I'm VERY comfortable with its consistency and the break strength. I've yet to have a spool of it go bad. I can't say the same for tippet...  Just bought a 2000 yard spool of 2 pound seaguar carbon pro for $19 on ebay. That should last me 10 years or better as long as I store it properly.

For larger line I keep a spool of 14,20,30,50 pound Vanish fluro or Ande Tournament line in one of those cheap Plano plastic spool holders in the boat.

If you ever have a bicycle tire go flat, you can make hundreds of flat rubber bands that work great on tippet spools by slicing the innertube.   If you need large ones cut on the diagonal, smaller cut perpendicular.

Yeah, I've seen them around 5.95 for a 2-pack.  Not bad...

Temp controlled room (not above 100 deg) and out of sunlight.

That is what I have always understood. I bring mine in the house and store them with my gear.
